Forte ready to return at ‘full speed’

- By ROGER RUBIN

Running back Matt Forte said the injured toe that kept him out of the past two games feels much better, and he is expected to play Sunday, when the Jets host the Patriots at MetLife Stadium.

“I want to play here,” he said following a day of limited practice.

When asked how much cutting he’d done, he replied: “A lot. I just go full speed like I know how and I feel good. ... It’s a lot better.”

The timing of Forte’s return is fortuitous. Bilal Powell hasn’t practiced this week because of a calf injury suffered in last Sunday’s win at Cleveland. Head coach Todd Bowles wasn’t ready to rule Powell out for the Patriots, but he seems doubtful.

“When guys go down, you miss them, especially when they’ve been playing good, but next man up,” offensive coordinator John Morton said. “It’s good that we got Matt back. ... It’s good to have a veteran guy who knows how to play the games. It’s good to see him back.”

Forte and Elijah McGuire will share the load running the ball for the Jets if Powell is out.

Punter Lachlan Edwards has upped his game.

In 2016, as a rookie, the Aussie averaged 40.8 yards per punt. Through the first five games this season, his average stands at 47.3. When asked about the quantum leap, specialteams coordinator Brant Boyer said Edwards “figured out how to be a pro.”

“When young guys come into this league, they don’t understand,” he said. “You don’t understand how to work out. You don’t understand how to take care of your body. You don’t understand how to do the things you’re supposed to do in this league. And when finally the light turns on and you figure out how to work. ... He has worked and prepared as much as any guy on this roster in the offseason.”

DL Muhammad Wilkerson (toe and shoulder) did not practice.
