Jets new boss loves non-tank

Christopher Johnson’s optimism might be wearing off on the Jets, and not vice versa.

The team’s acting owner, who took over the duties since Woody Johnson began serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, sang their praises after three wins and a hard-fought loss to the Patriots supported his call for more wins than losses.

A largely negative offseason, followed by an 0-2 start, had many fans pining for the team to tank and have a better chance of landing a franchise quarterback in the 2018 draft.

“We’re not tanking,” Johnson told NJ Advanced Media on Tuesday, reiterating what he told reporters during his first media appearance last month. “And I think you’re seeing that. I mean, this a great thing I’m seeing.”

Johnson praised the team for the progress they have made over the past four weeks.

“Yeah, how can you not [see it]?” Johnson said. “It’s so awesome. The energy in that locker room is unreal. I’m happy to be along for the ride.”

A prescient Johnson expressed a winning mentality on Sept. 20, after the Jets’ 45-20 thrashing at the hands of the Raiders rebooted the tanking talk. Since then, the Jets racked up wins against the Dolphins, Jaguars and Browns and are 3-3 heading into Sunday’s rematch in Miami.

“We are definitely not tanking,” Johnson said at the time. “It couldn’t be further from the truth. I want to win every game. Every player in that locker room wants to win. What you’re seeing, I think, are growing pains.

“I think you’re going to see this team get better and better and better.”
