Wilpon’s timely 65G gift to gov ov
Mets owner Fred Wilpon has picked a good time to get friendly with Gov. Cuomo — by giving him a $65,000 campaign contribution just before Wilpon’s organization began seeking state approval of an arena for the Islanders hockey team at Belmont Race track.
That’s nearly double the $35,000 Wilpon’s firm donated to Cuomo for all his prior campaigns.
Wilpon is the key real-estate partner in the Islanders’ bid on the Belmont project. That bid is being contested by New York City FC, which wants to build a soccer stadium at the site.
Empire State Development, whose board is controlled by Cuomo appointees, approves the winning bid.
“The decision is going to be made by who? The governor. It’s definitely a power play by Wilpon,” insisted one Long Island political insider.
Wilpon (right) and Sterling Equity declined to comment, but the development board said Cuomo will have no say in any decision.
“Participation in the political process has zero bearing on any of this, and any of these ‘sources’ with questions are free to contact us instead of trafficking in conspiracy theories,” spokeswoman Amy Vargheseese said.
New York’s campaign-finance laws allow bidders and other New Yorkers who do business with the government to give large campaign contributions to statewide candidates.
