Jets’ Skrine hot after day filled with flags

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Buster Skrine was in no mood to talk after Sunday’s 31-28 Jets loss to the Dolphins.

The veteran cornerback had a terrible day at Hard Rock Stadium. He was penalized three times for 36 yards and gave up two fourth-quarter touchdowns to Dolphins receiver Kenny Stills.

“Did you watch the game? Did you see what happened?” the normally friendly Skrine said in the locker room. “He made some good catches. That’s what happened.” What about the penalties? “I’m a physical player. My whole career I’ve gotten penalties,” Skrine said.

That is true. Skrine has six penalties this season, tied for second-most on the team behind Morris Claiborne. On Sunday, Skrine had a 28-yard pass interference penalty in the second quarter on a third down that kept the Dolphins’ drive alive, one they scored on.

Then, in the fourth quarter, he committed defensive holding twice on the Dolphins’ game-tying drive.

Jets coach Todd Bowles would not evaluate Skrine’s play.

“I’ll look at the film. I know he got a penalty,” Bowles said. “There [are] many people who got penalties. We’ll look at the film and see.”

Skrine has been called for defensive holding three times this season, interference twice and unnecessary roughness once.

Skrine actually played his best game of the season a week ago against the Patriots when he had an interception and a fumble recovery.

Penalties have always been an issue for Skrine. In 2014, he had 14 penalties while with the Browns. As a Jet, he had seven in 2015 and 10 last year.

The Jets could not take Skrine out of the game Sunday because Xavier Coleman, his backup, injured his shoulder in the first half.
