Helmet toss punctuates loss

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Jets committed plenty of penalties on Sunday, none dumber than the last one of the game.

Wide receiver Robby Anderson took his helmet off and threw it to the ground after the Jets’ first play of their last drive after the ball was not thrown to him. There was still eight seconds left in the game. Anderson received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that moved the ball from the Jets 16 to the 8.

“It was frustration,” Anderson said. “I’m passionate about this and I love this game. It hurts losing, especially when you’re up in a division game. Losing hurts.”

Anderson was asked if he knew the rule that you can’t take your helmet off on the field.

“I didn’t know that. It was just frustration,” he said.

He also was asked if he thought it was the final play of the game. “It basically was,” he said. Jets coach Todd Bowles said he did not see what Anderson did because his eyes were on the play. Anderson was deep down the field. When told Anderson had thrown his helmet, Bowles agreed that is unacceptable.

“If that’s what he did, yeah,” Bowles said. “I’ll wait and talk to him and I’ll look at the play myself and I’ll go from there.”

Anderson had three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown in the game.

The quality of the field at Hard Rock Stadium was terrible after the University of Miami and Syracuse played there Saturday. Players repeatedly slipped on the field. “It sucked,” linebacker Jor

dan Jenkins said. “Guys were slipping. I just about tweaked my ankle on one of them. It was on both sides. It just sucks having Miami and coach [ Mark] Richt playing down there on Saturdays and us having to follow suit on that field. ... the field sucked, but it sucked for both sides.”

Jenkins and all the Jets emphasized it was not an excuse for the loss.

RT Brandon Shell left the game in the first quarter with a neck injury. Bowles said he will undergo further testing. Backup cornerback

Xavier Coleman injured his shoulder.

LB Darron Lee was called for roughing the passer in the first quarter for a hit on Jay Cutler he felt was legal.

“Yeah, hit square in the chest and they threw a flag,” Lee said. “So, okay. Next play. You clearly don’t agree with it. I don’t agree with it. But guess what, I can’t change it. We can’t take it back.”
