For Nassau County Exec

-

Since Nassau is one of the most heavily taxed counties in the nation, the race for county executive this year hinges largely on taxes and spending. On that issue alone, The Post can, and does, endorse Republican Jack Martins for Nassau’s top spot.

A former state senator and Mineola mayor, Martins is hell-bent on straightening out the county’s $3 billion budget and getting it out from under the thumb of the Nassau Interim Finance Authority.

That might mean “reprioritizing” outlays, as he puts it, curbing overtime abuse and fixing the broken property-assessment process.

His Democratic rival, Laura Curran, a county legislator, agrees the budget needs fixing. But Martins’ record offers voters assurance they’ll see results.

In Albany, he backed the property-tax cap, a ceiling on budget hikes and two middle-class incometax cuts. As Mineola mayor, he oversaw fiscally restrained budgets, curbed debt and put the village on a sound financial footing.

He also aims to boost Nassau’s economy by luring major employers — not just for the tax revenue but also the jobs.

Ethics will also play a key role in the race, with GOP County Executive Ed Mangano fighting corruption charges while ex-Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (also from Nassau) faces a new trial after getting his first corruption conviction tossed on technical grounds.

“You need to pay more than lip service to restore public confidence in government,” says Martins, who’s pushing a new county ethics code. Shielding Nassau from MS-13 gang violence and facing the opioid crisis are also high on his to-do list.

Given his experience, commitment to fiscal order and strong overall agenda, Martins is clearly the better choice for Nassau.
