Bellinger breaks out of slump at perfect moment like fellow ROY

- Joel Sherman

HOUSTON — Cody Bellinger had taken on the hue of another rookie sensation this October. Not just striking out with the propensity of Aaron Judge but looking rather helpless doing so.

“Yeah, I watched and we were identical, striking out a lot, swinging at a lot of off-speed that we don’t normally swing at,” Bellinger said. “And I think that’s the pressure of the postseason sometimes.”

But as surely as Joe Girardi — whom we must refer to now as the former Yankees manager — stuck with Judge through October struggles and refused to dislodge him from the No. 2 spot, Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts maintained allegiance to Bellinger at cleanup.

And like Judge did as the playoffs transpired, Bellinger re- warded managerial faith.

“It’s a beautiful game — I can come out the next day and help the team to win after a bad day like that,” Bellinger said.

The bad day was his Golden Sombrero on Friday that dropped him to hitless — and mainly hopeless — in 11 World Series atbats with seven strikeouts. But there are a few more Judge-ian similarities:

1. As Bellinger goes, so often goes the Dodgers offense. 2. Bellinger, despite being a rookie, has a veteran steadiness, an accomplished hitter’s confidence, even in bad times.

“It’s one of those things that he’s got that calmness about him, and when things speed up, he has a way of sort of resetting and not letting it spiral,” Roberts said. “Even this year in his first year, there were times where he started to struggle. And he was able to slow the game down and not put too much pressure on himself.”

Recognizing how badly he was chasing balls out of the zone, trying to pull for power, Bellinger made a decision prior to batting practice for Game 4.

“Everyone noticed I was pulling off everything,” Bellinger said. “Usually in BP, I just try to lift, have fun. But I needed to make an adjustment, and so I decided I’m hitting every ball to left field today.”
