Jets buy low on Niners’ corner Robinson

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

The Jets made a move just before the trade deadline on Tuesday.

They shipped their fifthround pick to the 49ers to acquire second-year cornerback Rashard Robinson, who had lost his starting job in San Francisco.

The Jets are banged up at cornerback right now and Robinson could be asked to play Thursday night against the Bills. Morris Claiborne did not practice Tuesday because of a foot injury and Buster Skrine was limited as he remains in the concussion protocol.

The Jets like Robinson as a man-to-man corner who has big upside at just 22 years old. He was drafted in the fourth round by the 49ers in 2016 when Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke were still there. He fell out of favor with the new 49ers regime of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan. He started 13 games over two seasons for the 49ers. He has been penalty prone, getting called for 10 penalties this year with eight accepted. He has 17 accepted over the past two years, the second-most in the NFL.

Robinson has one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season.

“I think he fits any defense,” said Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, who played for the 49ers last season. “He’s a ballplayer, so he can adjust, he can adapt. We’ll definitely get somebody in the locker room who is a wildfire. When I say wildfire, he brings a lot of energy.”

Robinson got into trouble at LSU, where he was suspended from the team in 2014 for a failed drug test and poor grades. He was not allowed to re-enroll at the school after a June 2015 arrest for unauthorized entry into a teammate’s apartment.

Jets safety Jamal Adams, who played with Robinson at LSU, said he will bring “a lot of swagger and energy” to the Jets defense.

The Jets are not the only ones who will have a new player Thursday night. The Bills acquired WR Kelvin Ben

jamin from the Panthers, and he could play against the Jets.

“Looking forward to it. Hey, whatever they need,” Adams said. “All we can do is show up and bring the guys that we battle with. They’re going to do the same. It’s going to be an outstanding matchup.” ➤ The Jets signed DE Xavier

Cooper, who has played for the Browns and 49ers. They waived DL Ed Stinson. … The Jets placed rookie TE Jordan

Leggett on injured reserve. Leggett has been dealing with a knee injury all year. He was active for one game but did not play. … Bowles said Skrine still needs to pass two steps to be cleared from the concussion protocol. … Claiborne, safety Terrence Brooks (hamstring), RT Brandon Shell (neck), FB Lawrence

Thomas (concussion) and DE Muhammad Wilkerson (shoulder, foot) did not practice Tuesday.
