No deals for Giants, but they add a DE

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

And on the day of the trading deadline, the Giants rested. Keeping up a tradition they almost always follow with general manager Jerry Reese at the helm, the Giants did not make a trade by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline. In Reese’s 11 years as the GM, he has made one in-season trade, acquiring linebacker Jon Beason in 2013. The Giants did make a move, though. They signed defensive end Devin Taylor, who at 6-foot-8 becomes their tallest player. Taylor, a five-year NFL veteran with 15 career sacks from his days with the Lions, was with the Giants in the summer and was a moderately surprising roster cut after the preseason. Taylor, 27, started all 16 games last season for the Lions. He replaces Nordly “Cap’’ Capi, who was placed on injured reserve after straining a hamstring in the 24-7 loss to the Seattle. Taylor arrives because the Giants are thin at defensive end. Olivier Vernon missed the past three games with a sprained ankle and there is no g uarantee he will return for Sund ay ’s ga me against the Rams. Kerry Wynn, starting in place of Vernon, hurt his knee against the Seahawks. Another reserve defensive end, Romeo Okwara, was recently put on injured reserve. Before adding Taylor, the only two healthy defensive ends were Jason Pierre-Paul and rookie Avery Moss.

The Giants also signed linebacker Trevor Bates to the practice squad and removed receiver Kalif Raymond from the practice squad. Bates was a 2016 seventh-round draft pick of the Colts out of the University of Maine. Odell Beckham Jr. was at the Giants’ facility Monday and worked on his upper body in the weight room, still needing crutches to get around on his surgically repaired left ankle. Beckham will not play again this season, but that did not stop him Tuesday for trying on a general manager’s hat. He took to Twitter to ask/plead/dream that the Giants trade for Jarvis Landry, with the Dolphins already dealing running back Jay Ajayi to the Eagles and reportedly willing to part ways with Landry, for the right price. Beckham and Landry, both receivers, have been friends since their high school days and were teammates and roommates at LSU. Beckham tweeted “AYYYYYYEEEE OVER HERE OVER HERE !!! Gimme my brother back.’’ He also tweeted “Everything we ever dreamed of ’’ and “lol I’m petitioning !!!” Clearly, Beckham was having fun with this, although he surely would love to be reunited with Landry. Of course, it did not happen, as the Dolphins did not trade Landry.
