D’Antoni mourns dad’s death at 103

- By MARC BERMAN

Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni decided it was best to cancel his team’s shoot-around at the Garden on Wednesday because of the closed roads around the team hotel in Battery Park following the terrorist attack in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday.

“We had a bus ready to go,’’ D’Antoni said before the Rockets’ 119-97 win over the Knicks. “It would’ve taken us an hour at least. You don’t want to be on the bus for two hours for that, so we called it off.’’

D’Antoni held a team meeting at the hotel instead. The former Knicks coach is laying low anyway after his 103-year-old father, Lewis, died Saturday.

Lewis, a legendary high school coach in West Virginia, spent the winters in New York with his son when D’Antoni coached the Knicks. And the son got his fastbreak philosophy from his father.

“He definitely was that type,’’ D’Antoni said before facing the Knicks. “He lived a great life. We were prepared for it. It’s still a gut punch — 103 and do what you want and live without pain and go peacefully, you can’t ask for more. He was just like a normal dad who cared.’’

Lewis, who was surrounded by his kids and grandchildren in his final days, often attended Knicks games with Mike’s wife, Laurel, despite his age.

D’Antoni has seen a rebirth in Houston. The entire NBA wants to copy his offense — fast-paced with a lot of 3-pointers. Yet D’Antoni couldn’t get Carmelo Anthony to buy in, which was the reason the coach quit the Knicks in 2012.

D’Antoni already sees how good it is when the Knicks win games with the Garden rocking.

“New York’s great,’’ D’Antoni said. “The Garden will be buzzing. We won two games in a row, they thought we’re going to win the championship. It was like: ‘wow.’ That’s why it’s a special place.’’

Frank Ntilikina had rough night on offense, shooting 1-for-7 from the field(0-for-4 from 3-point range) with three turnovers. The rookie did notch five steals and eight assists in 26 minutes.
