Chirlane: I might run for office one day

- By YOAV GONEN City Hall Bureau Chief

Mayor de Blasio’s wife has been bitten by the political bug and says she “would consider running for office” after his second term ends in four years — but not for mayor.

Chirlane McCray revealed her potential political ambitions during an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine.

But she wouldn’t say which office she might be eyeing.

“I have no idea. But I would consider it. I think that all women should consider running for office,” McCray said.

“What’s happening now is just horrifying. With the people we have — with the person we have in the president’s office, with so many of the people we have in Congress — we need more progressive women in office.”

McCray has been an unusually involved first lady — sitting in with de Blasio on most interviews for top administration posts and over- seeing the launch of the administration’s mammoth ThriveNYC mental-health initiative.

She also chairs the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which raises money for a host of City Hall initiatives.

When first asked whether she would ever consider running for office, McCray didn’t hesitate.

“Yes. I would consider running for office. But not for mayor,” she said.

Asked why, she responded, “It’s a huge responsibility. And I feel like I’ve gone through this already.”

Democratic strategists said McCray would be a viable candidate.

Evan Stavisky, a partner at The Parkside Group who has family insight into a political-couple dynamic, said McCray’s work as first lady has set her up to be a “terrific” candidate.

Stavisky’s mother, Queens state Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, first won her seat by running for the seat formerly held by her late husband, Leonard Stavisky.

“The challenge is, if McCray’s going to run for office, she needs to define her own identity and her own set of issues. She’s done that admirably on mental-health issues,” he said.

If McCray were to change her mind and decide to run for mayor, 2021 would be a challenging year because of the expected large field, including a number of fellow Brooklyn Democrats.

“There is some buzz in political circles about a Chirlane run for mayor. But I think [Public Advocate Letitia James] is a stronger candidate for the same electoral base,” said political consultant George Arzt. “Chirlane actually would be a stronger candidate for public advocate or, possibly, Brooklyn borough president.”
