City’s $26M ticket flub
A tiny bungle with parking tickets just cost the city $26 million.
The city Department of Finance discovered earlier this year that while the code number for a certain violation was changed, the switch never made it to a half-million tickets given out by traffic agents.
Since the wrong code technically invalidates the tickets, the city had no choice but to dismiss them and refund the fines, according to department spokeswoman Sonia Alleyne.
