Hard-working Jeter weighing Stanton market

-

MARLINS president of baseball operations Michael Hill said his new boss, Derek Jeter, “is in the office every day” Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and that he has a good line of communications with the former Yankees star.

The largest immediate item on the docket for the franchise is learning what teams are interested in Giancarlo Stanton and what their offers will be. The Cardinals, Giants and Red Sox have been viewed as the main competitors, but Hill said the field of teams is deeper than reported.

Hill said he does “have a sense” which teams Stanton would invoke his no-trade clause for and not agree to a deal but would not reveal which they are. Hill said a trade would only be made if it met the criteria of helping to “build a sustainable organization.”

However, an executive aware of the Marlins’ financial picture said the perception within the industry is that unloading most or all of the $295 million Stanton is owed would be so valuable in helping with long-term debt Miami will be forced to make the best trade possible this offseason.

Dustin Fowler recently participated in a running program for A’s officials at their minor league complex in Arizona and is expected to be a fully ready player come spring training, according to Oakland GM David Forst.

Fowler ruptured his right patellar tendon while making his major league debut for the Yankees last June 29 and missed the rest of the season. On July 31, he was traded, along with James Kaprielian and Jorge Mateo, for Sonny Gray.

Kaprielian had Tommy John surgery last April while still in the Yankees system. Forst said his progress is going well and he should be good to start facing hitters after the major league team leaves spring training.

Mateo had 16 extra-base hits and 13 steals in 30 games at Double-A after the trade. He was hitting .235 with three homers and 10 steals in 21 games in the Dominican Winter League. Forst said he expects Mateo to be the everyday shortstop at Triple-A when next season begins.
