Amazin’s invest in medical staff

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Mets are adding depth to their medical department.

After a season in which the team was decimated by injuries, particularly to the starting rotation, general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday that two new people will be added to the medical staff — plus a trainer to replace recently fired Ray Ramirez.

Alderson indicated the team will add a “high performance director” at the top of the medical department.

“That will allow us to incorporate more technology related to exertion, recovery and a host of other things that we follow with biometrics,” Alderson said at the general managers’ meetings.

In addition, Alderson said new manager Mickey Callaway and pitching coach Dave Eiland are involved in keeping tabs on the pitchers’ offseason throwing programs. Last season the Mets were without Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler and Seth Lugo for extended stretches, as only Jacob deGrom remained healthy throughout.

“There will probably be a little more communication with them,” Alderson said. “A little better real-time knowledge of what they are doing.”

Frank Viola will become the new pitching coach at Double-A Binghamton, switching spots with Glenn Abbott, who will assume Viola’s role with Triple-A Las Vegas. The former Cy Young award winner Viola spent the last four seasons as the pitching coach at Triple-A.

Tom Slater has been added to Callaway’s staff as the assistant hitting coach. Slater was formerly a hitting coach in the Yankees’ minorleague system. Pat Roessler was promoted from Mets’ assistant hitting coach to the top position this month after

Kevin Long departed for the Nationals.
