Jerry seeks tighter reins on Goodell
If Roger Goodell can demand a private jet and health insurance for life, Jerry Jones expects the absolute most of the league’s commissioner in return.
“To sum it all up, what I want of all is I want accountability, more accountability. I want unprecedented accountability to the ownership. That simple,” Jones told the Dallas Morning News on Sunday evening following his Cowboys’ 37-9 loss to the Eagles.
Negotiations for Goodell’s contract extension have become complicated as Jones wages a civil war against the 11-year commissioner, stemming from the fallout of Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension. Jones has threatened to sue the league over the exten- sion, and made it clear to Goodell he isn’t messing around.
“I’m gonna come after you with everything I have,” Jones said, per a lengthy ESPN report, published Friday.
The owners on Goodell’s side, led by the Falcons’ Arthur Blank, have weighed a so-called “nuclear” option, in which the polarizing 75year-old could forfeit his be- loved Cowboys franchise. Jones maintains his focus is simply the betterment of the league.
“What I’ve tried to do with every breath is to make the Dallas Cowboys better, and to make the NFL better,” Jones said at halftime inside AT&T Stadium, where he received his Hall of Fame ring. “That’s what I try to do and that’s what I’m going to do.”
