CRACK IN HBO HACK

Iranian is ID’d

- By KAJA WHITEHOUSE

A former military man from Iran has been named in the theft of computer files from HBO, including scripts and plot summaries from “Game of Thrones,” Manhattan federal prosecutors said.

Behzad Mesri (inset), who went by the online hacker pseudonym “Skote Vahshat,” stole episodes of “GoT,” “The Deuce” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” as well as financial documents and e-mails belonging to an employee, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday.

“Hi to All losers! Yes, it’s true. HBO is hacked!” read an e-mail the feds say Mesri sent to HBO personnel in July notifying them of the hack.

Mesri allegedly told HBO officials he had full scripts and cast lists for the seventh season of “Game of Thrones” — only two of which had been broadcast at the time, the feds said. He demanded $5.5 million worth of bitcoin — an amount that he later increased to $6 million — in order to not dump the information online.

The indictment was unsealed following a Washing- ton Post report that said senior Justice Department officials have been pushing for Iran-related cases in a possible bid by the Trump administration to pressure Congress to impose new sanctions on Tehran. Mesri is alleged to have acted alone.

Still, Acting Manhattan US Attorney Joon Kim blasted the Iranian government for training Mesri and using him in other state-sponsored hacking missions.

“Today’s charges make clear that nation states like Iran routinely employ criminals, mercenaries, like Mesri, to conduct network attacks on America and elsewhere,” Kim said at a press conference.

“In this instance, he applied those skills that he learned [from the Iranian military] against HBO for personal profit.”

Kim warned that Mesri, who is still in Iran, will never be able to travel outside of his country again “without fear of being arrested and being brought here to face these charges.”

Mesri, 29, was charged with seven counts, including multiple counts of computer fraud, wire fraud and identity theft.
