New York’s holiday displays impress

- By BARBARA HOFFMAN

SOME of New York’s greatest holiday treats won’t cost you a dime. All you need is the time — and some sturdy walking shoes — to enjoy them. We speak, of course, of New York City’s holiday window displays, all of them now unveiled. This year’s best celebrate the season, this city and the occasional movie tie-in.

Look for ice-skating squirrels and motorcycleriding mice, bejeweled dinosaurs, a dazzling tribute to a Disney classic . . . and some wild and wooly furniture: ’Tis the season to be creative.

So, grab your nearest and dearest and share these windows together. Here’s what you’ll find and where you’ll find it.

BERGDORF GOODMAN 754 Fifth Ave. at 58th Street

Theme: To New York With Love Draws: This year, Bergdorf’s salutes half a dozen NYC cultural institutions in a big, blingy way. Among the highlights: crystal dinosaurs surrounding an equally icy (but exquisitely dressed) mannequin in its American Museum of Natural History window; an explosion of flower power for the New York Botanical Garden and a window full of red neon horns, pianos and string instruments to hail the New York Philharmonic. Look, too, for the papier-mâché versions of Abe Lincoln and Frederick Douglass in BG’s bow to the New-York Historical Society. One passerby noted as she marveled at the dinosaurs, “There’s a lotta crystals going on there,” and she whipped out a crystal-studded cellphone to take pictures.

Don’t Miss: The break dancers in their Dolce & Gabbana hoodies and Gucci shoes at the Men’s Store across the street, where the windows toast the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s commitment to dance, theater, music and film.
