T. Tower violates public-space deal: Stringer

-

Trump Tower is among many buildings whose management has violated agreements to provide public space in exchange for flouting zoning codes, city Comptroller Scott Stringer says.

Developers like Donald Trump made a pact with the city to provide the accessible space in exchange for being allowed to build their structures taller and denser than allowed.

But many developers, including Trump, are not living up to their end of the bargain, according to the second such report produced by Stringer’s office.

Last April, a Stringer audit of the 333 public-space buildings in the city found that 182 were not in compliance with the agreements.

This fall, in a follow-up, inspectors from the Comptroller’s Office revisited 34 of those sites — and found that only two had become compliant.

At Trump Tower, a public seating area was blocked off with a metal barricade, most outdoor tables were fenced off, and the fountain wasn’t working, Stringer wrote in his report.

In the past, Trump had also replaced an atrium bench with a sales counter to hawk Trump-branded products.

“You can talk about Trump all you want,” Stringer told WPIX11. “But if he’s getting away with this deal, and everyone else is getting away with this deal, then what was the point of making the deal in the first place?”

Stringer added that the city’s Buildings Department is “totally asleep at the switch.”
