No Justice for Kate Steinle: Letting a Killer Off Easy

THE ISSUE: Jose Garcia Zarate’s acquittal of murder in the deadly shooting of Kate Steinle in 2015.

-

How can such a travesty happen in a country as wonderful as the United States (“Immig beats the rap,” Dec. 1)?

My head is spinning at the absolutely idiotic verdict in the Kate Steinle case. This young women is dead, and why? Because she was in the wrong place?

Jose Garcia Zarate, an illegal immigrant, was the one in the wrong place. He shouldn’t have been in this country.

I’m so sorry for the Steinle family. The justice system turned its back on them. My prayers are with them, and I hope they can find solace in the fact that many Americans are behind them.

God bless Kate. She is missed by her family and many who never knew her. Jean Cole Juno Beach, Fla.

The Steinle verdict is simply unacceptable.

A civil society cannot exist if it allows known criminals to go free. And that is exactly what this notion of a “sanctuarycity” does. It breaks federal law and interferes with the process of im- migration control, without which we have no sovereignty as a nation.

The tragedy of Steinle’s death — at the hands of an illegal immigrant and repeat offender — should have been addressed quickly and justly.

The court’s decision is both a black-eye for the rule of law and a heartbreaking ending for her family. Kenneth LeBeck Plainview

A California jury’s horrific “not guilty” decision in the killing of Kate Steinle is worse than the O.J. Simpson verdict.

It’s clear now that the state cares more for criminals than its lawabiding citizens.

If you were thinking about moving to California, I urge you to stay away. Anthony Rotunno Staten Island

Kate Steinle did not receive justice in the courts. But “Kate’s Law” passed the House and is now in the Senate. Let’s hope the Senate honors her memory by passing it.

This defendant was deported five times and returned. The city of San Francisco gave him the sanctuary he expected.

If he knew he’d be facing automatic jail time for returning, perhaps Steinle would still be with us.

We need a punitive “wall” in addition to a physical one. Thus far we have been operating a travel service: catching illegal immigrants, sending them back, then seeing them return. Phil Serpico Queens
