Geno still starter ... if McAdoo’s around

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

OAKLAND, Calif. — So, was this a oneshot deal for Geno Smith or is he the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium?

Ben McAdoo, interestingly, did not commit to Smith after the 24-17 loss to the Raiders. Smith, in his first NFL start since 2014, went 21-of-34 for 212 yards and one touchdown, and he also lost two fumbles.

“Geno didn’t do anything that would have lost him the opportunity,’’ McAdoo said.

Of course, no one can be sure if it is McAdoo who will be making the decision, as his head-coaching tenure could be over this week.

There was some good news from around the league. The 49ers (2-10) beat the Bears 15-14, meaning the Giants currently are in line for the second pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Giants and 49ers have matching records, but the 49ers — winless at the time — beat the Giants 31-21 back on Nov. 12. So, as it stands now, it is the Browns with the No. 1 pick and the Giants with the second pick.

When Paul Perkins ran for 4 yards on a first-down play with 11:45 remaining in the second quarter, it was his first rushing attempt in seven games.

Rookie QB Davis Webb was not activated for the 12th consecutive game this season. His workload in practice is expected to increase so that he can finally get on the field.

The 1-yard touchdown run by Orleans Darkwa in the first quarter was only the fourth rushing TD of the season for the Giants.

S Nat Berhe in the first quarter was evaluated for a concussion and was able to return to the game. ... LB B.J. Goodson returned after missing four games with a high ankle sprain but was forced out in the third quarter with an ankle injury. ... RT Chad Wheeler left in the second half with a concussion and did not return. ... Rookie RB Wayne Gallman was forced out with a hip issue.

CB Eli Apple was not active for the third consecutive game. This time, Apple was not in uniform because of a hip injury that appeared late in the week on the injury report. Previously, Apple was not active because he nearly walked out on the team after hearing criticism in a film session and missed practice time while his mother was undergoing brain surgery.

LB Kelvin Sheppard started in place of injured Jonathan Casillas. … Justin Pugh participated a bit in the pregame warm-up but was inactive for the third straight game. He is planning to return for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. … Other Giants inactives: Webb, WR Travis Rudolph, LB Jeremy Cash and DT Khyri Thornton.
