Revis & weep

CB shows he has ways to go in return

- By GREG JOYCE

Darrelle Revis returned to the field Sunday for the first time in 336 days, but nobody was getting lost on Revis Island just yet.

In his debut with the Chiefs, the exJet started and played 39 snaps in the first half before spending the entire second half on the sideline. He could only watch as the Jets held off the Chiefs for a 38-31 win.

“It was great to be back out there,” Revis said. “I was really excited to play. … I’m trying to dust off the cobwebs. I haven’t played in 12 months, so I’m getting back into the mix of things and trying to have fun out there.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he made the call to take Revis out of the game for the second half because of the high amount snaps he played in the first half.

“He was up to 39 snaps and that’s plenty for him,” Reid said. “He’s just getting back into the game. It’s hard to say on that, but I appreciate him out there competing and that’s what he did.”

Revis made five tackles, but missed more than a few. He whiffed on Matt Forte in the first quarter, allowing the running back to turn a short gain into a 21-yard catch.

Robby Anderson also got in on the fun of showing up Revis one-on-one, catching a screen pass and putting a move on him to open a lane down to the 1-yard line. It set up Josh McCown’s quarterback sneak that tied the score at 14.

“That’s like my big brother,” Anderson said. “It was fun to go up against someone like that in a real game, someone you’ve looked up to your whole life.”

Jets coach Todd Bowles said he didn’t watch much of Revis, but was able to talk to him after the game.

“I said ‘Hi,’ ” Bowles said. “We exchanged pleasantries. I moved on.”

Revis, who made his name while playing the first six years of his career with the Jets, said his return to form is dependent on his conditioning.

“I’ve been training the whole time,” Revis said. “When you train, you can’t implement game speed, so this was a good test to step out there and see what I can do. As the weeks progress, I’m going to continue to condition myself and get better.”
