Bowles says McAdoo firing an ‘unfortunate’ situation

- By GREG JOYCE

Todd Bowles was supposed to be the New York football coach on the hot seat entering this season. Instead, he’s the last one standing.

While the Giants fired Ben McAdoo on Monday, Bowles still has the Jets playing for something in a 5-7 season not many people outside of Florham Park saw coming.

“It’s unfortunate,” Bowles said of McAdoo’s firing. “Every situation is different. I can’t control what goes on in that building, but you hate to see a fellow guy get let go. It’s part of the business we have.”

Asked if he had been given any assurances he’ll be back next season for the final year of his four-year contract, Bowles declined to offer any details.

“I’m just trying to get the team better,” he said. “I’m not going to discuss my job.”

Jets owner Christopher Johnson has said he won’t judge Bowles by the winloss record but instead by the team’s progress.

Bowles said he is pleased with his team’s fight each week but knows the job’s not done yet.

“We got things to learn from every week,” he said. “We show progress in some areas and areas we gotta get better at. It’s constant work.”

While Robby Anderson and Jamal Adams largely have stolen the spotlight among young Jets players, two more were lauded for their play in Sun- day’s win over the Chiefs.

Second-year right tackle Brandon Shell helped quiet the Chiefs’ most dangerous pass rusher, Justin Houston, who had no sacks or tackles and only one QB hit.

“Brandon Shell did a wonderful job blocking him,” left tackle Kelvin Beachum said. “I don’t want to say that we just shut Houston out, but you have to give a lot of credit to Brandon Shell. He had the onus of blocking him for the majority of the game.”

Rookie wide receiver Chad Hansen meanwhile had just two receptions, but both came on third downs to help extend scoring drives.

“Chad’s a hard worker,” quarterback Josh McCown said. “He’s been an asset for us. He gets in there and it’s fun to see him get rewarded.”
