Castro could be option at 2nd
Starlin Castro’s inclusion by the Yankees in the trade to the Marlins for Giancarlo Stanton could have implications for the Mets.
According to an industry source, Mets officials plan to speak with the Marlins about Castro this week at the Winter Meetings in an effort to fill the team’s hole at second base.
It wouldn’t be the first time the Mets engaged in trade discussions about the versatile infielder. In 2014, the Mets needed a shortstop and held discussions with the Cubs about Castro, but general manager Sandy Alderson wasn’t willing to sacrifice Noah Syndergaard in the deal.
It’s expected the Marlins’ asking price for the 27-year-old Castro will be significantly lower, as the team looks to shed payroll in the first year of a new ownership group spearheaded by Derek Jeter.
Castro has two years and $22 million remaining on his contract, with a club option for 2020. Last season, he posted a .300/.338/ .454 slash line with 16 homers and 63 RBIs in 112 games.
Other trade options include Jason Kipnis, Ian Kinsler, Josh Harrison and Cesar Hernandez. Neil Walker is among the free-agent options, but the veteran infielder could be hesitant to return because of bruised feelings, after negotiations fell apart last spring on a contract extension. The Mets traded Walker to the Brewers in August.
