The FDNY’s Hateful Tweeter
I was going to ignore Joseph Cassano’s remarks from 2013, but I have to address them (“Refire FDNY bigot, Dems tell Blasio,” Dec. 12).
The nepotism of hiring Cassano because his father is an ex-commissioner didn’t bother me as much as did his hurtful remarks.
He must think a lot of himself to be so brazen about his hate. He had no business tweeting those remarks. It provokes others to spew racist comments. What did the people he despises do to him?
Now he gets to be an FDNY firefighter? His apologies are worthless. He’s not sorry.

I was unaware that the unpopularity of a firefighter’s personal beliefs were somehow relevant to his ability to do his job.
Must he forever be ruined because people are offended by tweets he sent almost five years ago? Sometimes I don’t recognize this country.
To my knowledge, Cassano did nothing unlawful. His tweets may have been cringeworthy, but that’s all. It’s just speech.

Cassano paid for his mistakes and atoned for his bad judgment.
How about going after the firefighters who were hired with felony convictions on their record?
