Alderson says Dark Knight unlikely to be traded
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Matt Harvey should probably count on reporting to spring training with the Mets in two months.
After listening to offers for the beleaguered right-hander in recent days, general manager Sandy Alderson on Tuesday indicated he is planning on heeding the advice of his new manager and pitching coach, who believe Harvey is salvageable.
“The most important things I’m weighing is the opinions of Mickey Callaway and Dave Eiland and they don’t want to lose him,” Alderson said at the Winter Meetings. “Everything else is moot.”
The Rangers and Orioles are among the teams that have discussed Harvey with the Mets, but an industry source indicated Alderson and his staff have been largely underwhelmed by the potential return from a trade.
Harvey was tendered a contract this month and is expected to receive about $6 million for next season. He has spent significant time on the disabled list in each of the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2014. Most notably, Harvey underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in 2016.
Last season, Harvey went 5-7 with a 6.70 ERA in 19 appearances.
Callaway was asked if he believed Harvey’s struggles in the last two seasons were mental or physical.
“I am not really sure yet,” Callaway said. “I have talked to him on the phone, there is a lot more evaluating and talking to and seeing him throw, Dave getting his hands on him in the offseason that needs to be done before we can even discuss that.”
Callaway was noncommittal when asked who he expects in his starting rotation behind Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom. The Mets have Harvey, Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler, Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman and Rafael Montero as potential options.
“I have expectations that guys are going to work hard, and that is how we are going to evaluate guys,” Callaway said.
