Don: Need I say Moore?
‘I was right’ he’d lose
President Trump tried to turn defeat into victory Wednesday, crowing that he was right that Roy Moore wouldn’t win an Alabama Senate seat — even though he endorsed the accused perv and enthusiastically backed him right up to Tuesday’s election.
“The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went nt up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election,” Trump said in an early morning tweet referring to Moore’s GOP primary opponent.
“I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!”
Later, Trump admitted to White House reporters, “I would have liked to have had the seat,” but said Moore’s stunning loss to Democrat Doug Jones would have no effect on the presidential agenda.
Trump also said Moore’s defeat shows that the GOP needs better candidates.
“If last night’s election proved anything, it proved that we need to put up GREAT Republican candidates to increase the razor thin margins in both the House and Senate,” the president tweeted.
Jones said later he received a “gracious” congratulatory call from the president, and that he looked forward to working with Trump and the GOP to find “common ground.” Now, Jones said, is a “time to heal.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, meanwhile, said Jones’ upset victory in Alabama was “quite an impressive election.”
“It was a big turnout and an unusual day,” he said.
Moore has refused to officially concedel despite a statement from Alabama’s Republican leader that the race was over.
