Bill collector could chase ‘speeder’ senator

- Max Jaeger

Brooklyn state Sen. Marty Golden has three unpaid violations on his car — including one for speeding in a school zone that’s so overdue the city could sic a collection agency on him.

He has yet to fork over cash for speeding violations in August and November and still owes money on a citation he re- ceived last month for failing to feed a parking meter, according to the Department of Finance.

Golden is so behind on paying a $50 ticket for unsafely zipping by IS 227 in August that the city has put the citation “in judgment,” according to the department.

That means the city may “take steps to collect the debt, such as sending . . . debt to a collection agency or seizing assets,” the agency’s Web site states.

Golden’s office declined to say why he has failed to pony up the $160 he owes on the tickets, but released a statement in which he denied doing anything wrong in an incident Mon- day, at which he allegedly impersonated a cop to bully bicyclist Brian Howald into letting Golden’s driver steer his Cadillac into a bicycle lane.

“At no time in the exchange did I identify myself as a NYPD officer. By taking personal responsibility for the policing of traffic, Mr. Howald unnecessarily escalated this situation and created an unsafe environment for all involved including himself,” he said.

The NYPD is not investigating the incident, because Howald, a transit advocate and member of Brooklyn Community Board 2’s Transportation Committee, did not file a police report.
