‘Sick’ does well by SAGs

-

In nominations announced Wednesday, the 24th Screen Actors Guild Awards heartily endorsed the Frances McDormand-led revenge drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and offered swift redemption for the Golden Globes-overlooked romantic comedy “The Big Sick.”

“Three Billboards” led all films with four nominations, including a best actress nod for McDormand.

“The Big Sick” followed up its rough Globes morning with a best ensemble nod and a supporting actress nomination for Holly Hunter.

The other best actress nominees are: Judi Dench (“Victoria & Abdul”), Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”), Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”) and Margo Robbie (“I, Tonya”).

The best actor nominees are: Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”), James Franco (“The Disaster Artist”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) and Denzel Washington (“Roman J. Israel, Esq.”).

In the television categories, HBO’s “Big Little Lies” dominated with five nominations, and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and “GLOW” got four nods each. The steaming service led all networks with 19 nominations.

The SAG Awards, which will air Jan. 21 on TBS and TNT, have proven to be a steady bellwether for the Oscars. It’s been 22 years since a film that wasn’t nominated for SAG best ensemble won best picture at the Oscars.
