Spags: Rookie QB likely inactive Sunday

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Never say never. If there is a definitive plan in place to get rookie quarterback Davis Webb in a game this season, the Giants are keeping their intentions well-hidden.

Interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Wednesday “that’s the plan right now’’ when asked if Webb will be deactivated for Sunday’s game against the Eagles at MetLife Stadium. So, once again, Eli Manning will start and Geno Smith will be the backup.

Webb has been inactive for all 13 games this season. Even more disturbing, his routine in practice has not really changed. He is not getting increased work in order to get him ready to play.

“No. Not right now,’’ Spagnuolo said. “No. It’s been the same. But, I’m going to reiterate that Davis is a young man that’s preparing like he would start in the game. That’s just how he is.’’

Asked if Webb has any chance to start the following week in Arizona, Spa gnuo los aid ,“I don’t know that yet.’’

Safety Landon Collins has not been fully healthy in quite some time. In Week 5, he came away with a high ankle sprain against the Chargers and should have missed a few games. He did not miss any time, but his performance suffered.

Does he reg ret not taking time off ?

“Nah, I’m still young,’’ Collins said. “Maybe when I’m 26 or 27 I’d maybe consider it then but right now no, I’m still young right now.’’

Collins, 23, did not want to sit out if he believed he could help the team, even during this losing season.

“I kind of look at it as people recognize it when I’m out on the field, even though I’m injured I can still do something,’’ he said. “I can make a difference. Just my presence on the field I think helps our defense as a whole. It kind of just betters each one of us knowing we have all our guys on the field.’’

This week, Collins may not have a choice. He tweaked the same ankle while playing 53 of the 63 defensive snaps in the 30-10 loss to the Cowboys. It is not as bad an injury as the first time, but Collins was held out of practice and it could be severe enough to force him to miss Sunday’s game versus the Eagles. It would be a first for Collins, who has played in, and started, all 45 games in his three-plus years.

“Sometimes you got to protect these guys from themselves,’’ Spagnuolo said. “I don’t want him to go out there and get hurt any worse. We’ll do the right thing.’’

DE Jason Pierre-Paul again was limited in practice, wearing a bulky wrap on his right hand. He played against the Cowboys despite a finger injury. … Also limited: CB Brandon Dixon (heel / hamstring), TE Rhett Ellison (f inger) LB B. J. Good son( ankle), WR Travis Rudolph (hamstring). D TD am on Harrison was given a rest day off. WR Roger Lewis (ankle) and OL Justin Pugh (back) did not practice.
