Rustic Chic
It should surprise no one that Elisa Marshall, 32, and Benjamin Sormonte, 35 — co-founders of the Instagrammable Maman bakery, cafe and event space — deck out their Tribeca loft with charmingly chic Christmas decor.
Their 5-foot-tall tree stands some 2-feet higher, thanks to the pretzel tin and vintage wooden crate it rests on. The tree itself boasts twinkling lights, ornaments old and new and a DIY wreath bearing a vintage metal bow. But it’s not solely about style. “To have meaning and a story behind [your decor] . . . makes it that much more interesting,” says Marshall. Her father, an antiques dealer, would decorate their tree with trinkets from his youth, a tradition she maintains to this day. Her vintage golden glass-ball ornaments are handme-downs. She shares her fa- ther’s love for antiques, which explains that pretzel tin and wooden crate underneath the tree, and she sets her holiday table with plates passed down from her grandmother.
“It’s an eclectic collection of things that we love that represent the holiday,” she says.
That aesthetic extends to other parts of their home. Instead of hanging her Christmas stockings on a mantel, Marshall draped crocheted stockings over a branch she found in a park.
The couple says they like to change things up. Last year, their tree was tucked away in a corner; now it faces the street.
“It’s a nice way to share the beauty of the tree with other people,” Marshall says.
