Webb no closer to making his debut
Davis Webb may be getting more work in practice, but that has yet to mean anything Sunday, and it likely won’t this week either.
Interim coach Steve Spagnuolo said Geno Smith will continue to be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday behind Eli Manning in Arizona, and he doesn’t expect the team to make all three quarterbacks active.
“It’s going to stay the same right now unless something changes between now and Sunday,” Spagnuolo said following practice Friday.
The rookie signal-caller, inactive all season, received firstteam reps Wednesday and Thursday, but it remains uncertain if he will take any meaningful snaps this year with just one game — home on New Year’s Eve against the Redskins — remaining in this lost season.
When asked about making all three quarterbacks active, Spagnuolo all but shot down the idea.
“I don’t think we’d be able to do that,” he said. “It’s just too tricky with 46 [active players].”
Safety Landon Collins (ankle) and defensive end Jason
Pierre-Paul (finger) practiced on a limited basis Friday after being held out the previous two days and are questionable. Pierre-Paul expects to be active.
Safety Nat Berhe (hamstring) is questionable, while linebacker B.J. Goodson (ankle) and wide receiver Tavarres
King (concussion) are out. This will be the eighth game Goodson has missed due to injury.
All the injuries may be one factor in the Giants’ specialteams woes. The unit was abysmal in last Sunday’s loss to Eagles, getting a field goal, extra point and punt blocked.
“There’s been some juggling really in all three phases, but definitely special teams gets affected,” Spagnuolo said. Defensive tackle Khyri Thornton, cut by the Giants on Dec. 12, was suspended 10 games by the NFL, according to a report.
