‘UFO’ over LA sparks total ‘WTF’

-

La La Land was even spacier than usual. A mysterious streak of light across the Los Angeles sky got conspiracy theorists buzzing and launched a galaxy of stars exclaiming “WTF” on social media Friday night.

Angelenos were convinced it was a close encounter of the third kind.

“It was definitely aliens,” teased billionaire developer Elon Musk in a 9:50 p.m. tweet, before piling on with a video of the aerial enigma, captioned, “Nuclear alien UFO from North Korea.”

The nighttime launch created a shining, billowing streak that was seen throughout southern California and as far away as Phoenix.

Calls flooded TV and radio stations. Cars stopped on freeways as drivers stopped to take photos.

“Anyone? Seriously, wtf?” tweeted actress Evan Rachel Wood. “Wtf Is This,” Jaden Smith echoed. It turned out to be Musk all along, or rather, his SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying 10 satellites into orbit. The craft had lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 150 miles north of LA.

Touted Musk in a subsequent tweet: “If you liked tonight’s launch, you will really like Falcon Heavy next month: 3 rocket cores & 3X thrust. 2 cores return to base doing synchronized aerobatics. 3rd lands on droneship.”

Demi Lovato wasn’t buying it, tweeting: “I’m calling bulls--t on SpaceX’s excuse. That s--t’s a UFO and there’s been others that have been seen that are just like it!”
