Trump returns fire at ‘trash’ lit & Steve

- Mark Moore, Ruth Brown

The White House on Wednesday blasted the new book of blistering criticisms of President Trump and his family as “trashy tabloid fiction.”

The president lashed out at former White House strategist Steve Bannon, whose scathing assessments of Team Trump are peppered throughout “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”

“Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency,” Trump said in a statement. “When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

Author Michael Wolff says his book was based on more than 200 interviews with White House insiders over 18 months, but Trump Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed Wolff had spoken only to Bannon and Bannon’s allies.

“This book is filled with false and misleading accounts from individuals who have no access or influence with the White House,” she said.

Trump on Wednesday distanced himself from Bannon, saying his ex-strategist had nothing to do with the president’s improbable 2016 win over Hillary Clinton.

“Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn’t as easy as I make it look,” Trump’s statement said. “Steve had very little to do with our historic victory.”

Later Wednesday, lawyers for Trump sent a cease-anddesist letter to Bannon that cited a confidentiality agreement and demanded he stop “making disparaging statements” about Trump and his family, ABC News reported.

Bannon, however, seemed to want to make nice with Trump Wednesday night, asserting on Sirius XM radio that the president is “a great man” and “I support him.”
