Why America Should Back Iran’s Fight for Liberty

-

We need to support the Iranian protesters, who have had enough of their corrupt dictatorship, led by the ayatollahs’ false interpretation of Islam (“Unquiet Americans,” Benny Avni, PostOpinion, Jan. 2).

Young Iranians want to join the modern world and have no beef with the West.

Iran is a failed state in its current form. Listen to the people of Iran and help them in any way possible.

Persia has a great cultural history. The religious fanatics who have controlled the government since 1979 need to be overthrown and railroaded out. Where is the outrage in America? Robert Morie White Plains

There may be an important distinction between today’s protests in Iran and those of 2009.

Even before he was elected, President Barack Obama wrote Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini about improving relations between Iran and the United States.

According to former Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, Obama had his “deal” in mind even before the protests.

If so, Khameini may have felt that the United States wouldn’t support demonstrations, leaving Iran free to crack down.

In any case, we see that Iran’s general population thinks more like President Trump than Obama. Leonard Toboroff Manhattan

As usual, Avni hits the critical point: The bestcase scenario for the United States and the Middle East has always been regime change in Iran.

The Iranian people are speaking out against both the draconian implementation of Shia Islam and their government’s prioritization of exporting its ideology over domestic issues.

America’s tepid support of a free Kurdistan was a moral failure and a foreign-policy misstep, in part because it allowed the Iranian regime to expand its power.

We are gifted with a rare second chance. For the sake of the Iranian people and our own foreign-policy interests, America needs to support the Iranian protesters in every way. Aaron Meyer Oceanside

We were told by the geniuses of the Obama administration that if we were nice to the Holocaust-denying mullahs, they would be nicer to their people and to the rest of the world.

Just as in the 1930s, reality will slap the face of appeasing naïfs. Mark Friedmann Manhattan
