It’s just a plane old mess for fliers

It was a travel nightmare Thursday for anyone looking to get around — or out of — the Big Apple.

More than 1,000 flights were canceled, trains were severely delayed, many roads were impassible and even the ferries had to be reduced or scrapped altogether because of Winter Storm Grayson.

Both JFK and La Guardia airports shuttered for parts of the day and had hundreds of flights taken off the board. At Newark Airport, 867 flights were canceled.

“We still have the most delayed airports in the country, and winter storms certainly don’t help,” said Joseph Sitt, chairman of Global Gateway Alliance. “Check with your airline before leaving home and give yourself plenty of time.”

Airline officials said that travelers should continue to monitor their flights and that delays and cancellations would be expected until at least Friday afternoon.

American Airlines warned that early departures out of all three local airports for its flights would be canceled on Friday.

“We moved many aircrafts out of New York due to the storm,” said American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein.

“We first need to bring aircrafts back in based on airport conditions.”

United Airlines said it would operate on a reduced schedule at Newark and La Guardia airports on Friday and urged customers to check for the latest developments on its flights.

Elsewhere, the city’s subways experienced some delays through the morning rush but performed well for the duration of the storm.

The citywide NYC Ferry service — which has had two notable mishaps in far better conditions — was suspended entirely during Grayson’s wrath.

As for the streets, frigid temps were expected to keep a layer of snow and ice on the asphalt for days to come.
