Nets, Okafor still getting acquainted

- By FRED KERBER

So the 6-foot-11, 255-pound guy off the Nets bench just might be wearing a “Hi, I’m Jahlil” sticker on the front of his jersey for a while.

The Nets and Jahlil Okafor are still going through a “getting to know you” phase.

“It works on both parties, of me having to adjust to the team and the team having to adjust to me,” Okafor said Friday after practice at the team’s Brooklyn facility. “I’m open to it and so are they.”

Okafor, acquired on Dec. 7 from the Sixers with Nik Stauskas and a second-round pick, made his home debut — and second appearance as a Net — Wednesday in the victory over the Timberwolves. In 11 minutes, he had two rebounds and two points. And about 200 huge sighs of relief. “Amazing. I haven’t had that in a long time,” Okafor said of playing in a close, real, live game.

“Running it back in my mind, I thought I was in the correct spots most of the time. I thought I felt a little timid at certain points when I had the ball in my hands,” Okafor said. “That’s just not playing in a while, not wanting to make any mis- takes, make any turnovers. But as a whole I was able to do what I wanted to accomplish.”

And after that game, there were no complaints from coach Kenny Atkinson, who labeled Okafor as “solid” in his home debut.

“Our guys have got to learn how to play with him,” Atkinson said. “It’s the chemistry with the group he’s going to be out there with.”

Well, Okafor should get another shot Saturday when the Celtics invade.

“Just to build on what the team did, what I did and just to keep it rolling,” Okafor said of his immediate goals. “We started the year right: we’re 2-0. We’re got a huge test [Saturday] against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. … We’ve looking forward to the challenge and hopefully we can keep improving.” ➤ Caris LeVert (left groin strain), who missed Wednesday’s win over Minnesota, is listed as doubtful by the Nets for Saturday while DeMarre Carroll (sore rib) is questionable.
