Cuo $ itting pretty on huge war chest
Gov. Cuomo is a political master at collectin collecting campaign donations — including hefty checks from fat cats and special interests with business before state government. Seeking re-election to a third term and potentially eyeing a 2020 bid for the White House, Cuomo will announce on Tuesday that he has amassed nearly $31 million in his campaign treasury and raised $6 million this election cycle.
His most recent fund-raising activity was highlighted by a Dec. 14 bash at Cipriani Wall Street that featured Bill Clinton, rocker Jon Bon Jovi and actor Michael Imperioli, who is portraying Cuomo in the film about the Dannemora prison break.
Cuomo’s large war chest stands out as the Republican Party struggles to find a compelling candidate to challenge his re-election bid. Two announced GOP candidates are former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra and upstate As- sembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb.
“The governor is strong politically and governmentally with the strongest record of accomplishment of any governor in the nation and is leading the fight against Washington and for the people of New York,” a Cuomo campaign insider gushed.
Even GOP officials admit that Cuomo has built a formidable political machine, although they claim he’s vulnerable based on his record of deteriorating subway service and a laggard upstate economy.
