SPIRALING KNICKS CHOKE AS DAVIS CARRIES PELICANS IN OT

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Forty-seven seconds into the second half, Jeff Hornacek called timeout, and proceeded to rip into his players. A wide-open Anthony Davis jump shot infuriated the Knicks coach, continuing a pattern of sloppy starts in the third quarter.

He’s not going to stands for it much longer.

“We might have to change lineups going into the second half or something, because we come out there lackadaisically, like, ‘Oh, we’re just playing a game.’ You can’t play like that,” he said after the Knicks blew a 19-point, thirdquarter lead and fell to the Pelicans, 123-118, in overtime at the Garden on Sunday. “Anthony Davis is one of the best players in this league, and they throw it back to him, and we allow him to shoot an 18-footer. Like you think he’s going to miss it?”

Hornacek had the Knicks come out early after halftime to change things up. But that didn’t work, either.

“We’ll have to look at other options,” he said.

The worst-kept secret of the week became official Sunday when the Knicks announced they had signed point guard Trey Burke.

After waiving Ramon Sessions on Saturday to create a roster spot, the Knicks inked the 2013 Jazz lottery pick to a contract before the loss to the Pelicans. Burke, whose contract lasts through the end of the season with a team option for next year, was active but did not play.

The 25-year-old Burke had been playing with G-League Westchester, where he was averaging 26.6 points and 5.4 assists. He volunteered to start the year there after joining the organization late in the preseason.

“I wanted to start from scratch, kind of recreate my brand, recreate and show what I can do on a night in and night out basis, with consistent minutes,” Burke said. “Going down there, a lot of people look at it as a knock, but for me, when I went down there it was more so like a growing period for me. I wanted to start over.”

In his second game back after missing the previous 20 with a stress reaction in his lower left leg, Tim Hardaway Jr. logged 33 minutes — eight more than he did in a loss Friday to the Timberwolves — and scored 25 points.
