Democrats’ Bad Faith: A Ticking Time Bomb for DC
THE ISSUE: Democrats’ threat to shut down the government unless there’s a deal on DACA.
In 2006, many Democratic senators, including Chuck Schumer, voted for increased border protection and some type of barrier along the Mexican border (“The House divided on shutdown,” Jan. 18).
Yet now that President Trump wants to include both of those things in his immigration package, Democrats are against them. They only want DACA, and for this they’re willing to let the government shut down.
What’s wrong with this scenario? Can’t the Democrats negotiate on both? Harold Fishman Manhattan
Let the Democrats shut down the government. Only a few years ago, they cried to the public that the Republicans were going to shut it down. They claimed old people and babies were going to starve because of it.
All they want is to hike entitlement programs and give illegal immigrants amnesty to garner votes. Joseph Beyhl Holtsville
Any immigration compromise that allows for the legalization of DACA recipients must include the building of the wall, as President Trump has said.
Any agreement should also include the full implementation of E-Verify to check the immigration status of all employees for businesses.
More amnesty without securing the border and reducing incentives to break our laws would be foolhardy. Dennis Duffy Lynbrook
DACA protesters are demanding that Democratic congressmen vote “no” on the budget if their demands for permanent residency are not met.
This group of non-US citizens, here illegally, is asking Democrats to hold the American people hostage.
What’s wrong with this picture? Remember who these representatives are come election time. Andrew Zablow Parsippany, NJ
Democratic congressmen are willing to harm more than 300 million American citizens for 800,000 DACA recipients, a tiny portion of the population.
In order to do this, they must care more about illegal immigrants than about US citizens. Barry Levy Hawthorne, Calif
Democrats are threatening a government shutdown if a DACA deal cannot be reached, which they’ll inevitably blame on Trump.
Democrats should be careful. When Americans see that government can function with just “essential personnel,” the question becomes, “why do we need the rest of them?” Joe Alloy Wayne, NJ
