Hokies deny Virginia chance to be No. 1

Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored on a putback with 5.8 seconds left and Virginia Tech beat No. 2 Virginia, 61-60, on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.

Blackshear rebounded a missed layup by Justin Robinson and banked it in as he was being fouled. He missed the free throw, but Ty Jerome’s 28-foot attempt at the other end missed badly and the Hokies had a marquee victory.

Robinson led the Hokies with 20 points and seven assists.

Michigan State 68, Purdue 65

In East Lansing, Mich., Miles Bridges made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left and finished with 20 points, helping No. 4 Michigan State top No. 3 Purdue.

Villanova 86, Butler 75

Donte DiVincenzo scored a career-high 30 points, Jalen Brunson had 27 and No. 1 Villanova bounced back from its second loss of the season, rallying past visiting Butler.

Xavier 72, Creighton 71

In Omaha, Neb., Quentin Goodin made two free throws with threetenths of a second left, allowing No. 5 Xavier to hold off Creighton.

Baylor 80, Kansas 64

In Waco, Texas, Manu Lecomte scored eight straight points for Baylor after Big 12 co-leader Kansas had pulled within a basket, and the senior guard finished with 18 overall in the Bears’ upset victory.

Nebraska 67, Rutgers 55

In Lincoln, Neb., Isaiah Roby had 10 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots and Nebraska and didn’t let Rutgers get closer than 10 points in the last 14 minutes.

Fordham 80, Duquesne 57

In Pittsburgh, Freshman Ivan Raut scored a season-high 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting, Will Tavares and Prokop Slanina each had a double-double and Fordham beat Duquesne for its first road victory of the season.

Iona 86, Saint Peter’s 77

In Jersey City, Roland Griffin scored 22 points and Iona heated up in the second half to beat Saint Peter’s.

Manhattan 93, Monmouth 76

In The Bronx, Zane Waterman tossed in 28 points, Zavier Turner scored 25 and Pauly Paulicap chipped in with a doubledouble to propel Manhattan past Monmouth.
