Wake held for hero, 11

-

Memorial services were held Sunday for the heroic 11-year-old who died after jumping into a frozen Queens pond to save his pal.

Hundreds filed through the Glendale funeral home to pay their respects to Anthony Perez, who lay in an open mahogany casket as his mother sobbed from the first row.

He wore a striped dress shirt and a Transformers watch. Beside him in the casket lay a sunglasses emoji pillow and a baseball cap emblazoned with comic-book hero “The Flash.”

Anthony plunged into the frigid Forest Park waters last week to help friend Juan Umpierrez after he fell through the ice. The children had been playing near the pond when the 12-year-old unknowingly ventured onto thin ice.

Perez managed to push Umpierrez back onto safe ground, but couldn’t get out himself. Rescuers were unable to resuscitate him.
