Gypsy Spor rt

- — Cody Jones

The label: Gypsy Sport began as a humble line of hats made fromm recycled materials. LA native andnd designer Rio Uribe (inset), 32, migrated to New York in 2006 and worked in the stockroom at Balenciaga before landing a plum merchandising role at the company. Uribe quit in 2012 to focus on his own brand, and his hats soon appeared on model Cara Delevingne in a DKNY ad campaign. That got the attention of Opening Ceremony, which started stocking the hats.

The style: A mix of athleisure and streetwear. Uribe is known for gender-fluid looks (think: menn in fringed, pearl-encrusted jerseys) and casting models of different nationalities and gender iden-tities — many of them friends, or people found through social media and open casting calls. Gypsysy Sport keeps fans on their toes by stocking a very small range of products on its Web site each season. Currently, that includes a T-shirt and belt thatt riff on the Coca-Cola logo, and a $255 backpack made of recycled Coca-Cola cans.

The following: Gypsy Sport counts a bevy of badass boldfacers as fans including Bronx native Cardi B and her fiancé Offset, as well as Whoopi Goldberg and Jaden Smith.

The buzz: Uribe was asked by VFiles founder Julie Anne Quay to show his collection at the VFileses New York Fashion Week show in 2014, but his big break came the following year when he took home the 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award — and $300,000 of prize money to help grow his brand.
