Reich to Colts may impact Giants staff

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ paul.schwartz@nypost.com

Pat Shurmur no doubt put together wish lists filled with names of coaches he wanted to hire for his newly assembled Giants staff. It looks as if the list Shurmur jotted down for the role of offensive coordinator needs to grow.

Already denied permission by the Vikings to interview and hire their quarterbacks coach, Kevin Stefanski, Shurmur could see his interest in Duce Staley blocked as well. Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich was named Sunday as the Colts head coach after Josh McDaniels backed out of the job last week at the last minute. The Eagles likely will not want to see Staley — their running backs coach — leave for the Giants, an NFC East rival.

Philadelphia also lost John DeFilippo, its quarterbacks coach, who went to the Vikings as their new offensive coordinator — Shurmur’s former job. Staley is under contract and the Eagles could deny permission for the Giants to meet with him. Last year, the Eagles blocked the Jets’ interest in DeFilippo. Staley could be in line for a promotion on Doug Pederson’s depleted coaching staff.

Darrell Bevell, the former Seahawks offensive coordinator, is not under contract and thus immediately available, but there is a chance Bevell is headed to Indianapolis to serve as Reich’s offensive coordinator. Bevell and Colts general manager Chris Ballard were teammates at Wisconsin. So, Shurmur may have to expand his search. He has yet to hire an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach.
