Scandal may rock NCAA hoops elite: report
College basketball as we know it could be uprooted in the near future.
The corruption scandal that rocked the sport in October when 10 men, including four Division I coaches, were indicted on fraud and bribery charges involving recruits, agents and an apparel company has just scratched the surface, according to an eyeopening Yahoo Sports report Thursday. The FBI’s investigation into NCAA basketball’s black market has the potential to incriminate every major conference, namely top players, legendary coaches and a handful of the most renowned programs.
The biggest question hanging over the FBI’s case is when the documents containing their myriad findings will be released. They’re currently being held under protective order, according to the report, though people with knowledge of their content have an ominous message for the sport and its fan base.
“This goes a lot deeper in college basketball than four corrupt assistant coaches,” one source told Yahoo Sports of the documents, which reportedly contain thousands of wiretapped conversations and bank records from 330 days of investigating.
“When this all comes out, Hall of Fame coaches should be scared, lottery picks won’t be eligible to play and almost half of the 16 teams the NCAA showed on its initial NCAA tournament show this weekend should worry about their appearance being vacated.”
