Knicks may not like Frank’s summer plans

- By MARC BERMAN

LOS ANGELES — After being drafted by the Knicks in late June, Frank Ntilikina went back to France that night on a red-eye to play in the deciding Game 5 of the French League finals for Strasbourg.

It was quite the whirlwind. After spending a few days at home, he flew back to New York to play in the Orlando summer league.

Though he sat out the summer league with a knee injury, he would spend almost the rest of the summer in New York, working on his knee and game with the Knicks staff. The 19-year-old has seen little of France since becoming a Knick and even this All-Star break didn’t give him a chance to return.

That’s soon to change. Ntilikina is a little homesick — a 19-year-old living alone in Westchester. His mother Jacqueline and brother Brice have made periodic visits.

After playing in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, Ntilikina revealed he will spend most of the offseason training in France. It’s a bit of a surprise since his development after a modestly successful rookie season is vital to the organization’s growth.

Most likely the Knicks would send a developmental coach to work with him in France, but Ntilikina also indicated the Las Vegas Summer League doesn’t appear in his plans.

“I will probably come back home, but I will take care of working on my game,’’ Ntilikina said. “I will make sure I will come back stronger and even better.”

Unlike Kristaps Porzingis, who stayed the entire offseason in Latvia after blowing off his exit meeting before blowing out his knee earlier this month, Ntilikina will make a couple of side trips to New York.

One concern on Ntilikina spending the summer in France is that he won’t play enough of the NBA-level pickup games that have become prevalent in the U.S. — whether in the Drew League in Los Angeles or at Baruch or at Carmelo Anthony’s gym in Midtown.
