Trump honors 12 lifesavers

-

President Trump at the White House on Tuesday honored a dozen publicsafety officers for lifesaving acts of heroism.

Among the Medal of Valor recipients were six officers who responded to the San Bernardino, Calif., mass shooting by husband-andwife terrorists Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik on Dec. 2, 2015.

“They all share one thing in common, when faced with danger they each put the lives of others before their own,” Trump said.

The six California Medal of Valor recipients are San Bernardino County Sheriff ’s deputy Shaun Wallen, Sheriff ’s Department Detective Bruce Southworth, Sheriff ’s Department Corporal Rafael Ixco, Redlands Police Officer Nicholas Koahou, San Bernardino Police Detective Brian Ol- vera and District Attorney Investigator Chad Johnson.

“You’ve earned an eternal place of gratitude in our history and in our hearts,” Trump said.

Among the honorees were two others who stopped mass shootings in 2016: Police Chief Douglas Schroeder of Hesston, Kan., and Officer Andrew Hopfensperger Jr. of Antigo, Wis.

And firefighter Stephen Gunn was recognized for saving lives in a Peoria, Ariz., house fire in April 2016.

“I understand you keep your melted helmet as a reminder of that day,” Trump said.

“Now, you will have a symbol of our nation’s gratitude to go along side that very charred helmet — something much prettier than that helmet.”
