Smith a hit after showing up on time

- By MIKE PUMA

PORT ST. LUCIE — Dominic Smith was early Saturday, both in arrival time and swing.

A day after the Mets first baseman was scratched from the lineup because he reported late to the clubhouse, Smith finally got to play, bouncing a slow single to right field and drawing a walk in his team’s 10-5 loss to the Cardinals.

Smith blamed an alarm that didn’t sound for his tardiness the previous day. But he said waking up was no problem Saturday.

“When you make mistakes you are very cautious not to make them again,” Smith said. “[Friday] night I probably woke up every 25 min- utes, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t late. I am sure tonight I will wake up every 25 minutes again.”

Players are required to report by 8:45 a.m for a daily meeting. Smith, who is competing for a roster spot after a subpar Mets audition last season, said he arrived at “sixsomething” on Saturday.

“Dom knew he messed up,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “We held him accountable for that [Friday] and he went out there and played today.” Juan Lagares has been sidelined from the first two exhibition games because of a “twinge” in the back of his left leg, according to Callaway. But Lagares, who felt the discomfort while recently throwing from the outfield, has participated in workouts as normal and will be evaluated on a daily basis.

Outfielder Jay Bruce won’t play until at least Tuesday because of soreness in his left heel, which Callaway said is plantar fasciitis. Bruce likely will see action as the DH upon his return.

Seth Lugo allowed one hit over two scoreless innings. The right-hander is competing for a spot in the rotation or bullpen, but isn’t guaranteed a spot in either.
