Stores’ Answer to Parkland: No Teens Buying Firearms

-

After a 19-year-old gunman killed 14 students and three staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Fla., Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods both announced they would increase the minimum age to buy firearms and ammunition at their stores from 18 to 21 (“Dick’s and Walmart to limit sales,” March 1).

Dick’s Sporting Goods also announced that it would stop selling “assault-style rifles” at all of its locations.

I think the US should set a minimum age of 21 to buy all firearms and ammo, as well as require photo ID for the sale of ammo, which would help curb gun violence. Paul Bacon Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Edward Stack’s announcement that the company will discontinue the sales of assault weapons and increase the age to buy guns is a very positive development.

It’s time for all other sporting goods stores that sell guns to do exactly the same thing.

The NRA does not run our country. Something has got to be done, and Dick’s is starting a positive movement toward limiting assault weapons. John Amato Fresh Meadows

I commend Dick’s Sporting Goods for taking the lead on preventing gun violence.

Americans don’t need extremely powerful assault rifles to hunt in the woods or shoot at the gun range.

These weapons in the hands of someone with an unstable mind can lead to the senseless mass murder of innocent children.

America needs Con- gress to pass (and the president to sign) soundminded gun-control and mental-health laws immediately.

Whether it’s an 8-yearold child shot in the head in Canarsie or 17 people shot to death with an assault weapon in the Parkland, Fla., massacre, senseless gun violence must be shut down through serious guncontrol laws. Arthur Mackey Roosevelt

When the Second Amendment was written, the authors had no concept of bump stocks and assault weapons. I approve of Dick’s Sporting Goods’ decision to stop selling assault-style rifles in its stores.

Banning gun sales to anyone under 21 is a great idea, and it’s something President Trump has supported.

It amazes me that Americans can’t legally go into a store and buy more than six boxes of Sudafed per month, but they can buy guns. Edward Drossman Manhattan
