‘PO’d over small-box snub

- Abigail Gepner and Gabrielle Fonrouge

Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat will stop the US Postal Service — but they’re stumped by “small” mailboxes in Brooklyn.

The Post Office on Saturday stopped delivering to an 84-unit apartment building on Fenimore Street due to their “old and small mailboxes,” according to a notice taped to the door.

“It sucks. I have to go work before the post office is open, and I don’t get back until after the post office is closed,” said a resident who gave his name as Nate.

“To give a notice of only two days to find out you’re not going to get mail seems crazy.”

Superintendent Joe Rivera, 62, said the landlord of the six-story, 1941 building is trying to replace the lobby’s wall of mailboxes.

The narrow, metal mailboxes are in a back wall of the lobby and look similar to those in older apartment buildings throughout the city.

Rivera said the only choices are to build mailboxes outside or relocate them and block entrances to hallways or individual units.

“We want to do something, but where?” he said. “You don’t want to destroy your home.”

The USPS wants residents to pick up their mail a mile away at the post office on Empire Boulevard.

“I don’t agree with it, and I think it’s ridiculous. I’m a disabled person. I can’t go to the post office to get my mail,” said Vanessa Walker, 55, who uses a walker. “I don’t even go to the post office to mail anything.”

The Postal Service could not be reached Saturday.
