‘I DO’ TAKES DOUGH IN NYC

- By MELKORKA LICEA

Money can’t buy you love — but you need a lot of it to tie the knot in New York.

Manhattan weddings are the most expensive in America, costing an average of $76,944, according to a new survey of 13,000 brides and grooms by The Knot, a weddingplanning Web site.

That’s more than twice the national average of $33,391. It’s also more than in Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, where the price of nuptials averages $46,808.

Big spending on reception venues, bands and photographers drive Manhattan’s high wedding costs, said Kristen Maxwell Cooper, The Knot’s editor in chief.

“There’s so much more to choose from in the city in terms of locations and talented entertainment, so couples have more opportunity to spend,” said Cooper.

Manhattan brides also dished out the most dough on gowns in 2017, forking over $2,504 for a dress — or about $1,000 more than the national average.

North and central New Jersey was the second-most-expensive place to say “I do,” with average wedding costs of $62,074. In Long Island, weddings cost an average of $61,113, making it the third-priciest wedding spot.

Outer-borough couples are not only thriftier than their Manhattan counterparts, they’re more patient than most of the country. The average age of a bride in the boroughs is 33 compared with 29 nationwide, and 35 for a groom compared with 31. The average wedding age for brides and grooms in Manhattan is 31 and 32, respectively.

“People typically come to the city to accomplish their goals first, then consider marriage later,” Cooper said.
